Within the e5 instructional model, the first stage is engage.

  • The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) describes the stage of engage as:
  • The teacher fosters positive relations with and between students and develops shared expectations for learning and interacting.
  • They stimulate interest and curiosity, promote questioning and connect learning to real world experiences.
  • The teacher structures tasks, elicits students’ prior knowledge and supports them to make connections to past learning experiences.
  • They present a purpose for learning, determining challenging learning goals and making assessment and performance requirements clear.
  • The teacher assists students to consider and identify processes that will support the achievement of the learning goals.

Wallwisher

Wallwisher is an online sticky note environment. Students and teachers can post sticky notes to refers to a question or statement that a person poses.
A question is asked of the students that gets them to start thinking about Black Saturday and bushfire's in general. This can help us as teachers to understand what our students know and understand about the topic, which can help us to direct our teaching in positive beneficial ways for our students.
Students will be given time to add something to the wall, however they will have access to the wall whenever they have an internet connection, so students will be able to add something to the wall whenever they feel that they have something to add.




bubbl.us

Bubbl.us is an online program that creates Brainstorms and Mind Maps. Brainstorms and Mind Maps can be created with ease through the use of this online program.

Instructions
Students are to create a Mind Map of information they already know about, thoughts that they have and beliefs they have about the topic of bushfire and Black Saturday. Students put all this information onto a Mind Map using bubbl.us. Students create their Mind Maps individually and at the end of the lesson they must save and print out their Mind Map. Students then present their ideas to the rest of the class, to allow all ideas to be shared. Students can add information to their Mind Map at any stage through-out the topic, this should allow for a Mind Map with a large amount of information to have been created by the end of the unit on bushfire which will show the students learning.
